Boletus sensibilis Pk. Brick-cap Bolete Cap 6-15cm across, convex; brick red to sienna, becoming dull cinnamon with age; dry and unpolished. Tubes 1-1.5cm long; bright yellow. Pores 1-2 per mm; bright yellow, instantly blue where bruised, then slowly reddish. Stem 80-120 x 10-30mm, equal to clavate; bright yellow with base a dull red; apex very slightly reticulate. Flesh bright yellow, then instantly blue when cut (see Comment). Odor mild. Taste mild. Spores subfusiform, 10-13 x 3.5-4.5µ. Deposit olive-brown. Habitat gregarious in mixed deciduous woods on sandy soils. Found in eastern North America. Season July-September. Edibility uncertain-to be avoided. Comment The similar Boletus miniatoolivaceus Frost turns blue very slowly; and Boletus bicolor, also blueing strongly, is a brighter rose red on cap and stem. |
